Alghero
Alghero old town is only a short 20min walk from Mansarda Janna, along the sweeping beach front promenade.
Alghero lies on the North West coast of the island of Sardinia and is a historic walled city with a pretty harbour and fabulous coastline. Alghero is famous for its fascinating history, atmospheric Old Town “Centro Storico”, stunning landscapes, crystal clear waters and white sands.
The city of Alghero is steeped in history dating back to the early Stone Age. The city has been occupied by Italian kingdoms, Carthaginians, Phoenicians, Byzantines, Arabs and Catalans, all influencing the architecture, culture, cuisine and the people. Catalan in particular still influences the language and the food.
Alghero’s car free cobblestone Centro Storico is well worth exploring on foot. Wonder around the winding streets whilst enjoying the stylish boutiques and jewellers. Around most corners you will find a piazza with a bar or small cafe to enjoy a bite or “aperitivo”. Or there are plenty of restaurants, try the local dish of Paella, or one of the delicious pizzas and of course the seafood is fresh and fabulous.
Also dotted around the city are beautiful old churches, including the wonderfully coloured mosaic dome of San Michele which can be seen from most places of the Old town.
If you don’t fancy seeing the sights all on foot there is a “Catalan Train” that can take you on a tour to save your feet. This leaves from the port.
The port holds over 2000 boats now, private as well as charters. And there are Cruise liners that set anchor in the bay also. You can take a boat trip from the port to Neptune’s Caves, to see dolphins, to snorkel & diving along the majestic coastline of Alghero, we have some of the best diving in the world!
In the evening you can dine in a whole host of restaurants, go dancing in the local clubs, walk the passagiata with an ice cream, go Go Karting, bowling or set up camp in bar for the night…. the choice is yours.
The car rally “coral tour” starts & finished from Alghero, with a great local and visitor attendance. Alghero has hosted the start of the Giro d’Italia and is one of the bases for the World Rally Championships (a really interesting event to witness!)
Alghero beach… the Lido is the rated No:2 out of the 345 beaches throughout the whole of Sardinia!!!!. It is long and sandy, the sea is warm, shallow & safe. The umbrella-ed areas have the services of a shower, toilet, life guard, some have small bars attached too.
As well as swimming, you can hire pedalos, canoes, kayaks, floats, banana chairs. Some sections have children’s toys, slides, swings etc to play in included in your umbrella price. Or simply while away the day enjoying the sun trying to decide which ice cream to have later.
Pinetta area is a short walk or 5 min drive. This is an area that is covered by pine trees & this has sand dunes for sitting in & playing on.
A little further along the beach towards Fertilia the Splash Aqua park is fun!! Open during the summer months It’s a floating inflatable Water Park on the sea and is the largest in Italy. Remember to bring some ID (passport) or a credit card for your lifejacket deposit!
